“Localized” Green Architect Finds the Sweet Spot for Green, Historic and Affordable in Laney Walker/ Bethlehem / December 8, 2013 December 9, 2013

Architect Jennifer Langford, one of the professionals working on the Laney Walker/ Bethlehem revitalization is a walking contradiction. She is a south Florida native who grew up watching the effects of unbridled growth firsthand. And yet she sees herself as a quasi-native of Augusta, Georgia, making frequent trips to the city as a youngster to visit her mother’s brother and his family here.

She has the pragmatism of an engineer, with both her father and grandfather serving as civil engineers on some of the early major projects in the Tampa area. And yet she complements that typical grounded-ness of an engineer with what some would see as the idealism of a New Urbanist/green designer, having designed three of the first ten LEED certified homes in Florida. She speaks the language of a fiscal conservative, dedicated to designing the best product for a workable price. And yet she understands the language of intangible value, the value of designing homes that fit into their historical context, so that the new complements the old.

In short, Jennifer Langford embodies the many fine lines the Laney Walker/Bethlehem development team often must negotiate to deliver a high-quality, historically-complementary, green, affordable product. Read more…
